Kaya, happy in her own Skin

Kaya ScodelarioEveryone wants a piece of Kaya Scodelario.

The 17-year-old from north London has emerged as the hit of the third series of Skins, the racy E4 TV drama where she plays sensitive wild child Effy Stonem, and now movie scripts and cosmetic contracts are being dangled in front of her.

Kaya seemed pretty savvy to me when I met her at the First Light Movie Awards.
She was one of several young actors presenting prizes to the young filmmakers who had made live action and animated movies for First Light, which is backed by the UK Film Council and Barbara Broccoli, the force behind the Bond films.

Kaya has been with Skins since it began, but series three has really brought her into the public eye.
Even so, I recall a storyline from an earlier series, in which she was abducted, that was pretty hair-raising.
I had a sense then that she would do well.

‘People think I’m a psycho because of how Effy behaves,’ Kaya told me, laughing. ‘As you can see, I’m nothing like her.’

A major Hollywood agent has just signed her up, but Kaya’s in no hurry to pose poolside in Pacific Palisades.
‘I’m having fun doing Skins in England and learning about acting.

‘People talk about going to work in America but I’m scared of America, of working in Hollywood, although being from north London I’m sure I’d be able to look after myself,’ she joked.

The Skins alumni have done well. Nicholas Hoult, once Kaya’s screen sibling, last night opened at the Trafalgar Studios in New Boy, while Dev Patel is soaring after playing the leading man in the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.
